Interviewer: Carl, the words “shark attack” frighten us all. So should we all stop swimming in the sea?

采访者：卡尔，“鲨鱼袭击”这几个字让我们所有人都感到害怕。那我们都应该停止在海里游泳吗？

Carl: Well, shark attacks get a lot of attention, especially when they result in terrible injuries.

卡尔：嗯，鲨鱼袭击备受关注，尤其是当袭击造成严重伤害的时候。

Then people think that there are hundreds of sharks waiting to attack them.

于是人们就会觉得有成百上千条鲨鱼正等着袭击他们。

Interviewer: Are they right to think that?

Carl: No, not at all. The chance of being bitten by a shark is extremely small.

And only a few people are killed by sharks each year.

每年只有少数人死于鲨鱼之口。

Compare that number to how many people go into the sea!

It shows that sharks are not interested in attacking us.

Interviewer: Really?

采访者：真的吗？

Carl: Yes. It’s actually the sharks that need protection.

While sharks kill only a few people, we kill millions of sharks each year.

虽然鲨鱼每年只造成少数人死亡，但人类每年捕杀数百万条鲨鱼。

Interviewer: That’s a HUGE number! Why are so many killed?

Carl: A lot are killed by modern fishing.

卡尔：很多鲨鱼死于现代渔业捕捞。

Although it’s aimed at catching other fish, sharks are often caught at the same time.

But sometimes they are caught on purpose.

但有时鲨鱼会遭到蓄意捕捞。

Shark fin soup is popular in some Asian countries. Many are killed just for their fins.

鱼翅汤在部分亚洲国家很受欢迎。许多鲨鱼仅仅因为鱼鳍就被杀害。

Interviewer: That’s terrible!

采访者：太可怕了！

Carl: It is indeed. As a result, shark populations are decreasing rapidly.

卡尔：确实如此。结果就是鲨鱼的数量正在急剧下降。

In fact, some species are close to being endangered.

事实上，部分鲨鱼物种已经濒临灭绝。

And the shark’s biology doesn’t help much either.

而且鲨鱼自身的生物特性也让情况雪上加霜。

Interviewer: How so?

采访者：为什么这么说？

Carl: Well, shark populations grow at a slow rate.

卡尔：鲨鱼种群的增长速度十分缓慢。

Female great white sharks do not give birth until they are about 15 years old.

雌性大白鲨要到大约15岁才会繁育后代。

Interviewer: OK, so what should we do?

采访者：好，那我们应该做些什么？

Carl: We should stop fishing for sharks and protect the endangered species.

卡尔：我们应当停止捕捞鲨鱼，保护濒危鲨鱼物种。

Otherwise they will die out.

否则它们将会灭绝。

Sharks have been on this planet for over 400 million years; it would be terrible if they disappeared because of us.

鲨鱼已经在地球上生存了4亿多年，如果因为人类而消亡，那将是一场悲剧。

In addition, we could create safer swimming areas, and relocate any problem sharks.

除此之外，我们可以设立更安全的游泳区域，转移有威胁的鲨鱼。
