Host: Today. Our guest is Steve Fox.

He's here to talk about cultural influences on American food.

Guest: Thank you. It's nice to be here.

Host: When it comes to American food, some say no food was ever invented in America.

主持人：说起美国美食，有人说没有任何食物是美国本土独创的。

What do you think?

Guest: Hmm...That's not really true.

嘉宾：嗯……其实并不完全是这样。

For example, some say the hamburger comes from Hamburg in Germany, but they're wrong.

举个例子，有人说汉堡源自德国汉堡市，这种说法是错的。

The recipe for the meat in a hamburger may have come from Germany,

汉堡肉饼的做法或许源自德国，

but the final hamburger we know today was definitely created by Americans.

但我们如今熟知的完整汉堡，毫无疑问是美国人创造出来的。

Host: You mean there was a mixing of cultures?

主持人：你的意思是不同文化相互融合？

Food from overseas changed when it arrived in the States.

外来食物传入美国后，发生了本土化改良。

Guest: Right. And there are many more examples of mixed culture dishes like nachos, for example.

嘉宾：没错。还有很多融合多种文化的美食，墨西哥玉米片就是其中一例。

Host: Oh. I just love Nachos, Mexican corn chips covered in cheese.

主持人：哦，我超爱吃墨西哥玉米片，就是淋满芝士的那种。

Guest: Yes, they're delicious, but they're not traditional Mexican food.

嘉宾：确实很好吃，但它并不是墨西哥传统美食。

The recipe was actually invented by a Mexican cook for his American customers.

这道菜其实是一位墨西哥厨师为迎合美国客人发明的。

Then there are fortune cookies.

还有幸运曲奇也是如此。

Host: What do you mean.

主持人：这话怎么说？

Guest: They're not Chinese.

嘉宾：它根本不是中国食物。

Host: You're kidding? But every Chinese restaurant in America has them.

主持人：你在开玩笑吧？美国每一家中餐馆都有这个。

Guest: Yes, but they're unknown in China.

嘉宾：是有，但在中国本土根本没人知道它。

About 100 years ago, someone in San Francisco put a piece of paper with a fortune on it inside a Japanese style cookie, and the fortune cookie was born.

大约一百年前，旧金山有人在日式点心里面塞了一张写有运势寄语的纸条，幸运曲奇就此诞生。

Host: Wow, that's interesting. So they're like a mix of the Chinese, American and Japanese cultures.

主持人：哇，太有意思了。也就是说它融合了中国、美国和日本三种文化。

Guest: You got it. And then we have gumbo, the spicy stew.

嘉宾：你说得没错。还有秋葵浓汤，那种辛辣炖菜。

It was invented in New Orleans over 200 years ago and mixes French, African, Native American and Spanish cooking.

它两百多年前诞生于新奥尔良，融合了法国、非洲、美洲原住民与西班牙的烹饪风格。

Host: So it's the food of many different cultures all in one dish?

主持人：所以一道菜里汇聚了多种不同文化的饮食特色？

Guest: Exactly. American cooking often mixes things from around the world to make something completely new.

嘉宾：正是如此。美式料理常常融合世界各地的饮食元素，创造出全新的美食。
