Robert Burns and Auld Lang Syne

Born into a farmer’s family in 1759, Robert Burns never went to school.

1759年，罗伯特·彭斯出生于农民家庭，他从未上过学。

Most of his education came from his father.

他的知识大多来自父亲。

As a child, he spent most of his time working in the fields, but he also took a great interest in literature.

童年时期，他大部分时间在田里劳作，但他也对文学抱有浓厚兴趣。

He grew up to become the national poet of Scotland and is best known for his work Auld Lang Syne.

他长大后成为苏格兰的民族诗人，代表作是《友谊地久天长》。

He wrote mostly in English and in the Scottish dialect.

He was interested not only in big topics such as politics and love of his homeland, but also in small details like a mouse in mud.

他不仅对政治、家国之爱这类宏大题材感兴趣，也关注泥地里的老鼠这样的微小事物。

This can be seen in his work My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose and To a Mouse.

Burns was very proud of being Scottish and spent many years collecting traditional Scottish songs.

Auld Lang Syne was a poem written by him in 1788, set to the tune of a traditional folk song.

《友谊地久天长》是他1788年创作的一首诗，配以传统民谣曲调。

Today, in many countries around the world, it is sung at midnight on New Year’s Eve.

如今，世界上许多国家都会在新年前夜午夜时分唱响这首歌。

The lyrics remind us to remember our life and past friendships.
