Did you know that every five seconds somebody in the world goes blind?
That’s about 45 million people.
What is worse is that about half of them do not need to be blind at all.
Do you know what a “cataract” is?
It’s when the lens of your eye becomes more and more cloudy until eventually you can’t see anything.
That sounds terrible but the treatment is usually possible.
Cataracts can be removed and replaced by a special Perspex lens.
This simple operation lasts about 20 minutes and by the next day the patient can see again.
Cataract treatment is not really a problem in developed countries, but in developing countries the situation is different.
There is less access to treatment, and it is more expensive.
Because blind people can no longer work, they cannot pay for the operation, so they have no chance of seeing again.
An Australian eye doctor named Fred Hollows was determined to find a way to reduce the cost of this operation.
After visiting Nepal in 1985, and a few years later the countries of Eritrea and Vietnam, he began training doctors in those countries to perform the operations.
Then in 1992, he started the Fred Hollows Foundation, raising enough money to build two laboratories, one in Eritrea and one in Nepal.
The labs were completed in 1994, a year after his death.
Perspex lenses produced in those labs were much cheaper, and they are now sold in over 50 countries.
The Fred Hollows Foundation now works to prevent blindness in more than 25 countries, and it has trained hundreds of local eye doctors.
Today, more than two million people have had their eyesight restored, thanks to the work of the foundation.
Fred Hollows spent his life in service to others.
He believed action was the answer to human suffering.
He once said, “What we’re doing is giving these people the chance to help themselves. We are giving them independence.”
In my opinion, this is the best kind of volunteer work: helping others to help themselves. Thank you.
