W: We are here today with Nelson Leach on our show, who has many things,like acting, film directing, script writing, teaching.
女:今天我们的节目请到了纳尔逊·利奇,他身兼多职:演员、导演、编剧、教师。
Today we want to talk to him about his writing.
今天我们想和他聊聊他的创作。
W:Good evening, Nelson.
晚上好,纳尔逊。
M: Good evening.
男:晚上好。
W: Let's start at the very beginning.
女:我们从头聊起吧。
What is the first story you ever wrote?
你写的第一个故事是什么?
M: You will be surprised.
男:你会很意外。
My first story was the beginning of a novel which I wrote when I was around 11 years old.
我写的第一个故事是一部小说的开头,大概十一岁的时候写的。
I hand wrote at least 50 pages on a notebook that I kept inside my desk drawer in my bedroom.
我在卧室书桌抽屉里的笔记本上手写了至少五十页。
Somehow though it got lost.
不过不知怎么弄丢了。
I have no idea what happened to it.
我完全不知道它去哪儿了。
W: That's a pity.
女:真可惜。
After growing up, what movies or stories inspired your creativity?
长大后,哪些电影或故事激发了你的创作灵感?
Can you tell us a bit?
能和我们说说吗?
M: Well, from early on, it was Greek mythology.
男:嗯,从小时候起,就是希腊神话。
I was and still am, in a lot of ways, obsessed with it.
过去是,现在在很多方面依然痴迷。
Then I moved to classic literature, Shakespeare, Dickens just to name a couple, and then films.
后来我读经典文学,比如莎士比亚、狄更斯,然后是电影。
But Greek mythology still impresses me the most.
但希腊神话至今最打动我。
W: What about modern literature?
女:现代文学呢?
It doesn't inspire you?
它不能给你灵感吗?
M: I have to admit that I don't read anything modern.
男:我得承认,我不读任何现代作品。
W: Okay.Now imagine that you are not a well-known writer, how would you make directors and producers read your screenplay?
女:好的。假设你还不是知名作家,你会怎么让导演和制片人看你的剧本?
M: Well, I have never had any problems with that myself.
男:我自己从没遇到过这种问题。
So I don't really know what to say.
所以我其实不知道该怎么说。
However, some friends of mine have told me how they do it.
不过我有些朋友告诉过我他们的做法。
W: So how do they do it?
女:那他们是怎么做的?
M: Well, according to them, you must follow the work of other writers and directors that you find interesting, then get in touch with them through the Internet.
男:据他们说,你得关注你感兴趣的编剧和导演的作品,然后通过网络联系他们。
In this digital age, it's easier than ever to contact people.
在这个数字时代,联系别人比以往任何时候都容易。
E-mails, web pages, you know.
邮件、网页,你懂的。
Once you've made contact, you can send them your script directly.
联系上之后,就可以直接把剧本发给他们。
W: Then let's move on to another question.
女:我们来换下一个问题。
What experiences from your life influence your characters?
你生活中的哪些经历影响了你笔下的角色?
M: Every person I know, have ever known, or even run into for an instant.
男:我认识的、曾经认识的,甚至擦肩而过的每一个人。
My family, my friends, my relationships.
我的家人、朋友、感情经历。
I sit around public places and listen to other people's conversations.
我会坐在公共场所,听别人聊天。
If they interest me, I sometimes record them or write down things they say.
如果感兴趣,我有时会录音,或者记下他们说的话。
W: Then how emotionally involved are you with the characters you create?
女:你对自己塑造的角色投入多深的情感?
M: Oh, they live with me the entire time I'm writing them.
男:写的时候,这些角色一直都在我身边。
I can be out with friends at dinner, on a date, and I'm sitting there thinking to myself, "Well, how would my character react now?"
哪怕和朋友吃饭、约会,我都会在心里想:“我的角色现在会怎么反应?”
They're all around me except when I sleep, fortunately.
除了睡觉,他们几乎时时刻刻都在我脑子里,幸好是这样。
