A Forest in the Sand

沙漠中的森林

We all share a great responsibility to protect the environment, without which we could not survive.

我们所有人都肩负着保护环境的重大责任，没有环境我们就无法生存。

However, the amount and scale of environmental issues may seem too much for ordinary people.

然而，环境问题的数量与规模对普通人而言似乎难以应对。

But with hard work and determination, anyone can achieve great things.

但只要肯付出努力、意志坚定，任何人都可以成就不凡。

One such person is Yin Yuzhen.

殷玉珍就是这样一个人。

At a young age, Yin moved to Inner Mongolia to live with her husband in the desert.

年轻时，殷玉珍跟随丈夫来到内蒙古的沙漠生活。

She felt very lonely.

她感到十分孤寂。

To improve the tough environment and cheer herself up, Yin began planting trees to take land back from the desert.

为改善恶劣的环境、排解心中苦闷，殷玉珍开始植树，向沙漠夺回土地。

“I would rather die of tiredness from fighting the sand than be buried by it!” she said.

她说：“我宁可治沙累死，也不能让沙子把我埋掉！”

The deserts of Inner Mongolia have spread over centuries.

几个世纪以来，内蒙古的沙漠不断扩张。

Planting small trees was very hard work.

栽种树苗是一项极其艰苦的工作。

The couple had to travel on foot, doing everything by hand.

夫妻俩只能徒步往返，所有活儿都靠手工完成。

At first, many trees did not survive, but over the years, she learnt from her failures, discovering the best plants and methods to use to successfully plant a forest in the desert.

起初，很多树苗都没能存活。但经年累月，她从一次次失败中总结经验，找到了最合适的树种与方法，最终成功在沙漠里造出一片树林。

Over more than three decades, Yin Yuzhen and her husband have planted over 300,000 trees and have taken back a large area of land from the desert.

三十多年间，殷玉珍和丈夫栽种了30多万棵树，从沙漠中夺回大片土地。

Yin has received praise and awards from all over the world.

殷玉珍收获了来自世界各地的赞誉与奖项。

It has been said of Yin: “She is a symbol of courage, patience, and perseverance. Her work in greening the desert deserves universal respect.”

人们这样评价殷玉珍：“她是勇气、耐心与坚持不懈的象征。她绿化沙漠的事业值得所有人尊敬。”

It is inspiring to see a clear example of how the problem of desertification can be dealt with.

这个治理荒漠化的鲜活事例十分鼓舞人心。

Although actions may seem small and insignificant, over time they join together to become great achievements.

个体行动或许看似微小、微不足道，但日积月累，汇聚起来就能造就伟大的成就。

The journey of 1,000 miles begins with one step and the will to continue, and a great forest begins with a single small tree and the will to protect and nurture it.

千里之行，始于足下，贵在坚持；万顷林海，始于一苗，重在呵护培育。
