THE STONE IN THE ROAD
路中间的石头
Once upon a time there was a king who often thought,
从前有一位国王，他常常思索，
"Nothing good can come to a nation whose people only complain and expect others to solve their problems."
“如果一个国家的民众只会抱怨，坐等别人解决自己的难题，这个国家将毫无前途。”
One day, he had an idea.
一天，他想出了一个主意。
Early one morning, the king disguised himself and went to a local village.
一天清晨，国王乔装打扮，来到附近的村庄。
He placed a large stone in the middle of the main street and hid gold coins under the stone.
他在主干道中央放了一块大石头，并把金币藏在石头底下。
Then he hid behind a huge maple tree and watched.
随后他躲在一棵高大的枫树后面暗中观察。
The first person down the street was a milkman with his cart.
第一个路过街道的是赶着运奶车的送奶工。
He crashed into the stone, spilling the milk everywhere.
他撞上了石头，牛奶洒得到处都是。
"What fool put this stone here?" he shouted.
“哪个蠢货把石头放这儿的？”他大喊道。
He picked himself up and angrily went away.
他站起身，怒气冲冲地离开了。
After a while, a group of women came along, each balancing a pot of water on her head.
过了一会儿，一群妇女走了过来，每个人头顶都稳稳放着一罐水。
One woman tripped over the stone and her water pot went crashing to the ground.
其中一位妇女被石头绊倒，水罐摔在地上碎了。
She picked herself up and limped away in tears.
她站起身，一瘸一拐、哭着走远了。
Neither she nor her friends thought about moving the stone out of the road.
她和同行的女伴们，没有一个人想着把石头挪开。
The king watched all day as many people complained about the stone,
国王观察了一整天，无数路人都在抱怨这块石头，
but he found nobody making an attempt to move it.
却没有一个人试着把它移走。
The king was in despair.
国王陷入了失望。
"Is there no one in this village who feels any responsibility to keep their neighbours from harm?"
“难道这个村子里，没有一个人愿意承担责任，避免邻居们受到伤害吗？”
Just then, the king saw a young girl coming along.
就在这时，国王看见一个小姑娘走了过来。
She was the daughter of a local farmer.
她是当地一位农夫的女儿。
She had been working all day and was very tired.
她干了一整天活，十分疲惫。
But when she saw the stone, she said to herself,
可当她看见这块石头时，心里暗想，
"This stone is a danger to anyone who comes down the street after dark.
“天黑之后，路过这条街的人都会被这块石头伤到。
I'll move it out of the way."
我得把它挪到路边去。”
The girl pushed the stone with all her might.
小姑娘用尽全身力气去推石头。
After a great deal of effort, she finally succeeded in moving it to the side of the street.
费了好大一番劲，她终于把石头挪到了街道边上。
Imagine her surprise when she saw the gold coins where the stone had been!
当她看见石头底下藏着一堆金币时，别提有多惊讶了！
Just then, the king stepped out from behind the tree.
就在这时，国王从树后走了出来。
"Oh sir," the girl said, "does this gold belong to you?
“先生，”小姑娘说道，“这些金子是您的吗？
If not, we surely must find the owner, for he will certainly miss it."
如果不是，我们一定要找到失主，他肯定会因为丢了金子而着急。”
The king said, "My dear, the gold is mine.
国王说：“孩子，这些金子是我放的。
I put it in the road and moved the stone over it.
我把金币放在路上，再用这块石头盖住。
Now the gold is yours, because you are the only person who has learnt the lesson I wanted to teach my people."
现在这些金子归你了，因为只有你读懂了我想教给百姓的道理。”
