Anderson: Hello, Stella! Please sit down. Let’s start with what your dream career is and how you plan to make that dream come true!

安德森：你好，斯特拉！请坐。我们先来聊聊你理想的职业是什么，以及你打算如何实现这个梦想！

Stella: Thanks, Ms Anderson. Er, you see, that’s my problem. I don’t know what I want to do for a career yet.

斯特拉：谢谢您，安德森女士。呃，您看，这正是我的问题。我还不知道自己想从事什么职业。

Everyone keeps telling me I should decide now before it’s too late.

所有人都一直告诉我，我应该现在就做决定，免得为时已晚。

Anderson: Oh, I see … Well, don’t listen to what everyone says. It’s perfectly normal to not know what career you’d like to pursue.

安德森：噢，我明白了……好吧，不必听所有人的说法。不清楚自己想从事什么职业是十分正常的。

But what are your favourite subjects?

那你最喜欢哪些科目？

Stella: Um, I guess I like maths best because I get to solve lots of complicated problems.

斯特拉：嗯，我想我最喜欢数学，因为我可以解答很多复杂的题目。

But I don’t see how maths is really useful in most jobs.

但我不明白数学在大多数工作中究竟有什么用处。

Anderson: Well, maths and all the other general subjects are a great base for many types of work.

安德森：是这样，数学以及其他通识科目是很多类工作的良好基础。

For instance, with maths, you could go into finance, economics, accounting, and even computer programming.

比如说，学好数学，你可以从事金融、经济学、会计，甚至计算机编程相关工作。

Stella: Hmm … So you mean it’s OK to pick a general subject? I thought employers would prefer me to specialise in something.

斯特拉：嗯……所以你的意思是选择一门通识类科目也可以？我原以为雇主会更希望我在某方面专攻。

Anderson: Not really, it depends on the job. Just remember that specialising can also tie you to a particular field, which may cause problems, too.

安德森：不完全是，这要看具体工作。要记住，专攻某一领域也会把你局限在特定行业，这同样可能带来问题。

Perhaps it’s best for you to stick with a maths major but find a course that offers a lot of variety. That way, you get an insight into different fields.

或许对你来说，最好继续选择数学专业，但找一门内容丰富多样的课程。这样你就可以了解不同领域。

Stella: Thanks, counsellor, that’s a good idea. But what if my exam score is too low? I won’t get into university.

斯特拉：谢谢您，指导老师，这是个好主意。但如果我的考试分数太低怎么办？我就上不了大学了。

Anderson: Just try your best. Getting a higher education is the most important thing.

安德森：尽力就好。接受高等教育是最重要的。

Even if you don’t get into university, there are other choices and opportunities.

就算没有考上大学，也还有其他选择与机会。

Stella: But if I don’t attend university, it will be much harder to find a high‑paid career.

斯特拉：可是如果不上大学，想要找到高薪工作会困难得多。

Anderson: You’ll be fine! You have your whole life to prove yourself.

安德森：你会没问题的！你有一生的时间去证明自己。

And remember that money is not the most important thing.

而且记住，钱并不是最重要的。

You need to find work that is meaningful to you.

你要找到一份对自己有意义的工作。

Stella: Yes, I guess you’re right, counsellor. Thank you so much. I feel a little better now.

斯特拉：是的，我想您说得对，老师。非常感谢您。我现在心里好受一些了。

Anderson: It’s my pleasure. Just remember to stay happy. And don’t worry so much about success and money.

安德森：不客气。记得要保持乐观。不要太过担忧成功和金钱。

They will both come to you when you find a career you enjoy.

当你找到一份自己热爱的工作时，这两者自然会随之而来。
