China Sets Record with Deep-Sea Dive

On 27 June 2012, China became only the fifth country to send a manned submarine into the deep sea.

when its ship, the Jiaolong, reached a depth of 7,062 metres in the Pacific Ocean’s Mariana Trench.

Jian Lin, a researcher at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts noted that the achievement is a symbol of “China’s increasing leadership in scientific exploration of the deep ocean”.

In the future, this 8-metre-long submarine will be used for a deep-water survey of the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans.

China Creates World’s First Quantum Computing Machine
中国研制出全球首台量子计算原型机
On 3 May 2017, Chinese researchers Pan Jianwei and his colleagues announced that they had created the world’s first quantum computing machine, at a press conference in Shanghai.

At its most basic level, a regular computer processes data as a series of ones and zeros.
普通计算机最基础的运算方式,是依靠一连串的0和1处理数据。
This limits how fast it can go.
这一点限制了它的运算速度。
The Chinese quantum computing machine uses photons, which can process much more data at the same time.
中国这台量子计算原型机利用光子,能够同时处理海量数据。
This makes it much faster than regular computers.
这让它的运算速度远超普通计算机。
Indeed, the Chinese machine can process data 24,000 times quicker than regular computers.
事实上,这台设备的数据处理速度是普通计算机的24000倍。
The quantum computing machine is still under development, and they have not been able to create a fully functioning quantum computer just yet.

Pan reports that it may be another ten to twenty years before this dream can be realised.
